On the estimation of time dependent lift of a European Starling during flapping
We study the role of unsteady lift in the context of flapping wings in birds'
flight. Both aerodynamicists and biologists attempt to address this subject,
yet it seems that the contribution of the unsteady lift still holds many open
questions. The current study deals with the estimation of unsteady aerodynamic
forces on a freely flying bird through analysis of wingbeat kinematics and near
wake flow measurements using time resolved particle image velocimetry. The
aerodynamic forces are obtained through unsteady thin airfoil theory and lift
calculation using the momentum equation for viscous flows. The unsteady lift is
comprised of circulatory and non-circulatory components. Both are presented
over wingbeat cycles. Using long sampling data, several wingbeat cycles have
been analyzed in order to cover the downstroke and upstroke phases. It appears
that the lift varies over the wingbeat cycle emphasizing its contribution to
the total lift and its role in power estimations. It is suggested that the
circulatory lift component cannot assumed to be negligible and should be
considered when estimating lift or power of birds in flapping motion
Generalized Near Horizon Extreme Binary Black Hole Geometry
We present a new vacuum solution of Einsteinâs equations describing the near horizon region of two neutral, extreme (zero-temperature), corotating, nonidentical Kerr black holes. The metric is stationary, asymptotically near horizon extremal Kerr (NHEK), and contains a localized massless strut along the symmetry axis between the black holes. In the deep infrared, it flows to two separate throats which we call âpierced-NHEKâ geometries: each throat is NHEK pierced by a conical singularity. We find that in spite of the presence of the strut for the pierced-NHEK geometries the isometry group SL(2,R)ĂU(1) is restored. We find the physical parameters and entropy
An efficient CDMA decoder for correlated information sources
We consider the detection of correlated information sources in the ubiquitous
Code-Division Multiple-Access (CDMA) scheme. We propose a message-passing based
scheme for detecting correlated sources directly, with no need for source
coding. The detection is done simultaneously over a block of transmitted binary
symbols (word). Simulation results are provided demonstrating a substantial
improvement in bit-error-rate in comparison with the unmodified detector and
the alternative of source compression. The robustness of the error-performance
improvement is shown under practical model settings, including wrong estimation
of the generating Markov transition matrix and finite-length spreading codes.Comment: 11 page

Prophylaxis pharmacotherapy to prevent the onset of post traumatic brain injury depression: a systematic review
YesBackground: Depression is a common psychiatric problem following traumatic brain injury (TBI) with reported prevalence rates of 30-77% in the first year post-TBI. Given the negative influence of post-TBI depression on cognition, interpersonal, social, physical and occupational functioning; early initiation of pharmacotherapy to prevent post-TBI depression has been considered. This systematic review will synthesize the available evidence from published studies on the effectiveness and harms of pharmacotherapy for the secondary prevention of post-TBI depression.
Method: Studies published before November 2017 were reviewed. Six databases were searched, with additional searching of key additional documents. Studies meeting inclusion criteria were evaluated for methodological quality.
Results: Six articles addressing five studies met inclusion criteria. Study designs included three randomised controlled trials (RCT), two retrospective cohorts and one case-control. Prophylactic pharmacotherapy included antidepressants, beta-blockers and statins. In one RCT, the number-needed-to-treat with sertraline to prevent one case of depression post-TBI at 24 weeks was 5.9 (95%CI: 3.1-71.1). Prescribing beta-blockers prior to TBI reduced the depression risk regardless of the specific brain trauma. TBI patients with pre-existing hyperlipidemia not treated with statins had an increased depression risk compared to those without hyperlipidemia.
Conclusion: Early initiation of sertraline prophylaxis in nondepressed TBI patients shows promise to reduce the odds of post-TBI depression developing. However, in the absence of rigorous study of tolerability, existing data are insufficient to recommend sertraline prophylaxis. Optimal timing and treatment duration with identification of patients most likely to benefit from prophylaxis require further consideration. Dedicated prospective studies assessing the effects of beta-blockers and statins on post-TBI depression are required.The Transport Accident Commission (TAC), through the Institute for Safety, Compensation and Recovery Research (ISCRR) at Monash University, provided funding for this review
Gender, war and militarism: making and questioning the links
The gender dynamics of militarism have traditionally been seen as straightforward, given the cultural mythologies of warfare and the disciplining of âmasculinityâ that occurs in the training and use of men's capacity for violence in the armed services. However, women's relation to both war and peace has been varied and complex. It is women who have often been most prominent in working for peace, although there are no necessary links between women and opposition to militarism. In addition, more women than ever are serving in many of today's armies, with feminists rather uncertain on how to relate to this phenomenon. In this article, I explore some of the complexities of applying gender analyses to militarism and peace work in sites of conflict today, looking most closely at the Israeli feminist group, New Profile, and their insistence upon the costs of the militarized nature of Israeli society. They expose the very permeable boundaries between the military and civil society, as violence seeps into the fears and practices of everyday life in Israel. I place their work in the context of broader feminist analysis offered by researchers such as Cynthia Enloe and Cynthia Cockburn, who have for decades been writing about the âmasculinistâ postures and practices of warfare, as well as the situation of women caught up in them. Finally, I suggest that rethinking the gendered nature of warfare must also encompass the costs of war to men, whose fundamental vulnerability to psychological abuse and physical injury is often downplayed, whether in mainstream accounts of warfare or in more specific gender analysis. Feminists need to pay careful attention to masculinity and its fragmentations in addressing the topic of gender, war and militarism
The effect of anatomic location of injury on mortality risk in a resource-poor setting
Introduction Injury is a significant cause of death, with approximately 4.7 million people mortalities each year. By 2030, injury is predicted to be among the top 20 causes of death worldwide. We sought to characterize and compare the mortality probability in trauma patients in a resource-poor setting based on anatomic location of injury. Methods We performed a retrospective analysis of prospectively collected data using the trauma database at Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) in Lilongwe, Malawi. We included all adult trauma patients (â„16years) admitted between 2011 and 2015. We stratified patients according to anatomic location of injury, and used descriptive statistics to compare characteristics and management of each group. Bivariate analysis by mortality was done to determine covariates for our adjusted model. A Cox proportional hazard model was performed, using upper extremity injury as the baseline comparator. Descriptive statistics were used to describe the trend in incidence and mortality of head and spine injuries over five years. Results Of the 76,984 trauma patients who presented to KCH from 2011 to 2015, 49,126 (63.8%) were adults, and 8569 (17.4%) were admitted. The most common injury was to the head or spine, seen in 3712 patients (43.6%). The highest unadjusted hazard ratio for mortality was in head and spine injury patients, at 3.685 (95% CI = 2.50â5.44), which increased to 4.501 (95% CI = 2.78â7.30) when adjusted for age, sex, injury severity, transfer status, injury mechanism, and surgical intervention. Abdominal trauma had the second highest adjusted hazard of mortality, at 3.62 (95% CI = 1.92â6.84) followed by thoracic trauma (HR = 1.3621, 95% CI = 0.49â3.56). Conclusion In our setting, head or spine injury significantly increases the hazard of mortality significantly compared to all other anatomic injury locations. The prioritization of timely operative and non-operative head injury management is imperative. The development of head injury units may help attenuate trauma- related mortality in resource poor settings
Paradoxical augmented relapse in alcohol-dependent rats during deep-brain stimulation in the nucleus accumbens
Case reports indicate that deep-brain stimulation in the nucleus accumbens may
be beneficial to alcohol-dependent patients. The lack of clinical trials and
our limited knowledge of deep-brain stimulation call for translational
experiments to validate these reports. To mimic the human situation, we used a
chronic-continuous brain-stimulation paradigm targeting the nucleus accumbens
and other brain sites in alcohol-dependent rats. To determine the network
effects of deep-brain stimulation in alcohol-dependent rats, we combined
electrical stimulation of the nucleus accumbens with functional magnetic
resonance imaging (fMRI), and studied neurotransmitter levels in nucleus
accumbens-stimulated versus sham-stimulated rats. Surprisingly, we report here
that electrical stimulation of the nucleus accumbens led to augmented relapse
behavior in alcohol-dependent rats. Our associated fMRI data revealed some
activated areas, including the medial prefrontal cortex and caudate putamen.
However, when we applied stimulation to these areas, relapse behavior was not
affected, confirming that the nucleus accumbens is critical for generating
this paradoxical effect. Neurochemical analysis of the major activated brain
sites of the network revealed that the effect of stimulation may depend on
accumbal dopamine levels. This was supported by the finding that brain-
stimulation-treated rats exhibited augmented alcohol-induced dopamine release
compared with sham-stimulated animals. Our data suggest that deep-brain
stimulation in the nucleus accumbens enhances alcohol-liking probably via
augmented dopamine release and can thereby promote relapse

How to Change the Weight of Rare Events in Decisions from Experience
When making risky choices, two kinds of information are crucial: outcome values and outcome probabilities. Here, we demonstrate that the juncture at which value and probability information is provided has a fundamental effect on choice. Across four experiments involving 489 participants, we compare two decision making scenarios: one where value information is revealed during sampling (Standard), and one where value information is revealed after sampling (Value-Ignorance). On average, participants made riskier choices when value information was provided after sampling. Moreover, parameter estimates from a hierarchical Bayesian implementation of cumulative prospect theory suggested that participants overweighted rare events when value information was absent during sampling, but showed no overweighting in the Standard condition. This suggests that the impact of rare events on choice relies crucially on the timing of probability and value integration. We provide paths towards mechanistic explanations of our results based on frameworks which assume different underlying cognitive architectures
